The City of Violence

The destinies of five friends meeting for the first time in 10 years, reunited by the the death of
a common friend, open a sort of 'Made in Chungcheong Province' Pandora's box. The Korean
title "Zzak Pae" refers to a partnership, a duo formed between Tae-Soo (Jung Doo-Hong), a
Detective from Seoul and old childhood friend of his, Seak Hwan (Ryu Seung-Hwan). Meeting
together after many years at the funeral of their childhood friend Wang-Jae (Ahn Gil-Gang), the
two also see old friends like Pil-Ho (Lee Beom-Soo) and Dong-Hwan (Jung Seok-Yong) who is
Seak Hwan's elder brother. ot the best of reunions, but it was the first time they saw each
other in 10 years. Problem, of course, is that everyone has changed. some in very suspect ways,
like Pil-Ho. Curious about the sudden death of his friend, Tae-Soo decides to stay in a town a
few days to recharge his batteries and look into Wang-Jae‘s acquaintances, whick reveals the
existence of a myterious gang possibly being behind the murder , which forces Seok-Whan
and Tae-Soo to look into it and find the culprit.

I have been watching director Ryu's film for 5 years and I think his film is still evolving. This
film is hard to define in languages. Because his style is so variable. Also this film is not a
simple action film. He is speculating life and jenre throughout City of Violence. somebody might
remeber Die or Bad(2000) doing jenre bending through whole episode. this film looks more like
Die Bad in the sense of looking out the world. The City of Violence starts with a simple story
as his previous fimls., but in this film director Ryu tries to deal with the true action arts.
Director says this film is about pure action. But people who watch this film said they hardly find
pure action. Problem is there are two opposite thing life(Crying Fist) and action (Die Bad). those
things are very difficult to get along with each other.

When I see this film I have to be throw one thing away to understand rest of one thing.
there's so many humble people and the death of good people. In this tragedy, director wants to revolt
against all twisted society. But I couldn't read his intention because of tremendous action sequence.
He didn't allow me to concetrate both character and action and so did the camera. Camera tends to
run away from action itself and makes very uncomfortable to catch the pure action.
So why does he use so perplexed method to make a film. Maybe He is sick of action jenre itself,
then he wants to move into various jenre and story. That's why this film looks in a transition
between his film. like Pil-ho said in this film, The winner is not the man who strong but the man
who keepn his way long. I believe that director Ryu's evolution. next time when I see his film I
would be very satified with his film.
